How to Prepare and Use the Optimal Chia Seeds

Optimal Chia Seeds should be considered part of your regular diet and not as a supplement. They can be added to all of your favorite meals just like you would add a spice, and since the Optimal Chia Seeds have little to no taste, you won't even realize they're there! Simply sprinkle them over salads, soups, veggies, or any other foods of your choice, and help benefit your overall health without even tasting it. Dr. Ben recommends taking three tablespoons of chia seeds or gel three times a day.

The lack of taste in Optimal Chia Seeds is very important since you usually end up with healthy foods that have strong flavors or unfamiliar textures, making it a challenge to consume them. You can add Optimal Chia Seeds directly to your foods, dry, or as a gel. Whether you are eating Optimal Chia Seeds in your food dry, as a gel, or directly from the container (not recommended, but possible), remember to drink an ample amount of water, as you normally would when consuming any food that is high in fiber.

How to make Chia Gel: Put 1/3 cup of dried chia seeds into a resealable glass container. Add two cups of filtered water and stir with a whisk.  Wait 5-10 minutes and whisk again before refrigerating.  Chia gel will last up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator.  If you choose to eat the Optimal Chia Seeds in a gel form, you can add them right in to jams, jellies, peanut butter, milkshakes, nut spreads, smoothies, hot or cold cereals, yogurts, mustard, ketchup, tartar sauce, barbecue sauces, and more. It makes a great fat substitute, promoting energy and endurance.

High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Optimal Chia Seeds naturally contain more than 60% of Omega-3 fatty acids--higher than any other plant we know of. Chia seeds do not have to be ground up prior to consumption like many other seeds that are high in good fats such as Omega-3s--which adds a huge convenience factor in adding them to your diet.

High in Protein

Between 19–23 percent of the Chia seed by weight is protein--a much higher protein weight than other seeds and grains. Good fats combined with an excellent source of protein make Optimal Chia Seeds perfect for those who are dieting.

High in Fiber

Optimal Chia Seeds can absorb up to 30 times their weight in liquids such as juice or water. This ability can prolong hydration (we call it time-released water) and retain electrolytes in body fluids, especially during peaks of exertion or exercise. A 15 gram serving of Optimal Chia Seeds can provide you with 4-5 grams of fiber.

Antioxidants

Optimal Chia Seeds contain Vitamin C and Vitamin E, but also have Cinnamic acids. It is believed that these three (especially the Cinnamic acid) help preserve the seeds and, more importantly, protect the good fats from oxidizing (going bad). Because of this process, Optimal Chia Seeds can last for years.

Calcium

Just 2 oz. of Optimal Chia Seeds contain 600 mg of Calcium--compared with 120 mg for milk. Following the Herbal Pharmacist® recommendation to find your vitamins and minerals in ""food form,"" Optimal Chia Seeds are a top suggestion for those seeking more calcium in their diet without resorting to tablets or capsules. Plus, Optimal Chia Seeds contain Boron--a critical mineral in bone health--so it's ideal for those concerned with Osteoporosis and overall bone care.

Health Benefits of Chia Seeds:

Weight Loss and Blood Sugar Level Control

Having fiber before a meal can help curb your appetite by giving you the sense of being full. Since Optimal Chia Seeds can absorb up to 30 times their weight in water, you will have the sensation of feeling full though you have not consumed a lot of food.

Also, as previously mentioned, Optimal Chia Seeds are high in protein. Protein is very beneficial in any weight loss program since it provides a great energy source and helps in assuring that you keep your muscle mass while burning off fat.

When Optimal Chia Seeds are mixed with water or stomach juices, a gel forms that creates a physical barrier between the carbohydrates and the digestive enzymes that break them down. The carbohydrates are digested eventually, but at a slow and uniform rate. Optimal Chia Seed gel also can slow digestion and help balance blood sugar levels. There is no insulin surge or spike needed to lower the blood sugar level after eating Optimal Chia Seeds. By achieving this, you will have fewer energy drops and cravings for processed foods. This balancing of blood sugar levels is also critical for those with both hyper (high) and hypo (low) blood sugar.

Heart Disease Prevention

With regards to heart disease, the Optimal Chia Seeds can provide added dietary support. We know that a high-fiber diet is recommended for those with high cholesterol and other forms of cardiovascular disease. Also, Omega-3 fatty acids are recommended for heart health. The Omega-3 fatty acids found in the Optimal Chia Seeds (ALA) can be converted into EPA (the heart-healthy component of fish oil). Adding a few servings of the Optimal Chia Seeds to your regular diet is a huge step in the right direction for anyone concerned with cardiovascular disease.

Overall Good Bone Health

As previously mentioned, the Optimal Chia Seeds are high in calcium and other minerals known to be helpful in overall bone health. Getting your minerals (and vitamins) from a food source, instead of using tablets or capsules is most ideal. You get better digestion, absorption, and retention when they come from food rather than synthetic products. A recent study showed that women who consumed more calcium in their regular diet had better bone health and required less calcium than those who took most of their calcium from supplements.

Digestive Disorders

Fiber is critical for healthy digestion. We need to consume 35+ grams of fiber per day and if it doesn't come from your food you must supplement. Now, with Chia, 1 tablespoon serving can give you about 1/5 of your daily needs (7.4 grams). One tablespoon of Chia isn't very much, so I recommend at least 2 to 4 per day as part of your everyday diet.

Questions & Answers about Optimal Chia Seeds - Bulk 1 Pound

Q: What do you mean by the Chia Seeds being "chemical free"?

A: Chia plants are incredibly resistant to pests. Due to their strong natural resistance, growers do not need to utilize herbicides or pesticides when growing Chia Seeds.

Organic certification is very expensive and if one is aware of how the Chia Seed crops are grown, they know that it is unnecessary to purchase Certified Organic Chia Seeds as all Chia Seeds are by default already Organic! Save your money and buy your Apples, Strawberries, Peaches, imported Grapes all organic.

Q: By the way, why did you stop selling the white chia seeds?  are the black ones the same?  Can i still give those to my toddler?

A: I stopped selling the white as there is no nutritional difference, but they're twice the price. I don’t like gimmicks like that.

You definitely may still give Black Chia to your toddler.

I recommend making Chia Gel and flavoring it with some applesauce or maple syrup or honey or jam/berries.

Pleasantly surprised
After hearing Dr Ben speak about Chia seed on one of the podcasts, I decided to try them. My order arrived quickly and was well packaged and dry. I made some of the Chia gel and (rather nervously) tried it with some peanut butter spread on some sprouted grain toast. It was really good! Great and painless way to add fiber, plus you get all the additional benefits Chia offers. Thanks for all the great information you provide on your website!!

Very Satisfied!
Locally chia seeds go for $22 per pound, so I decided to see if I could get a better deal elsewhere. The chia seeds I ordered from HealthEGoods were much more reasonable, and were the same or better quality than the seeds I'd bought locally. The seeds arrived quickly and in good shape. I will definitely do business with this company again!

  • From How often? at 8/18/11 9:57 AM
    • How often do I take Chia Seeds?
    • Hi there,

Chia's hydrophillic structure holds water, so when mixed with sauces, drinks, yogurt, salad, dressings, cream cheese, jellies, salsa, hot/cold cereal, dips, puddings and soups, it displaces calories and fat without diluting flavor.

Chia gel is a great fat replacer for baked goods and has special qualities for sugar control and weight loss. 1 pound of Chia seeds would make 24 cups of gel once hydrated.

The recommended dose for Chia gel (hydrated Chia Seeds) is 3 tablespoons three times a day. I recommend to use 1/3 cups of seeds and put in 2 cups of water and whisk to hydrate, then place in fridge. It will last 3 weeks. Once a day you can take 1 tablespoon of the raw seeds and put them in water or juice prior to workout or physical activity or for appetite control and weight loss.

Make sure you drink plenty of fluid when taking them dry.

      Best,
      Jatone

  • From ORAC #? at 10/5/11 8:58 AM
    • What is the ORAC # for your black chia seeds?
    • Hello -

We don't test the ORAC for our chia seeds as we don't feel Chia Seeds are necessarily used as a potent antioxidant.

There are numerous other things that are stronger in antioxidants than Chia Seeds.

Chia Seeds are mainly used to:
      - support healthy bowel movements
      - increase beneficial fatty acids
      - reduce amount of food ingested and therefore support weight loss
      - obtain additional minerals especially calcium

If you would like to increase antioxidants, I recommend dark berries which are fresh or frozen.

      In health,
      Dr Ben

      Karry
    • Karry -

Chia seeds last for a long time - especially when stored properly.

Taste a small amount and see how they are for you. If tastes ok, no problems!
