Molybdenum is an essential trace element for most all life forms. It functions as a cofactor for numerous enzymes that process important chemical transformations in the global carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles. Thus, molybdenum-dependent enzymes are required for people's health and for the ecosystem as well.
Function: In humans, molybdenum is known to function as a cofactor for three enzymes, with one enzyme being especially important:
Sulfite oxidase catalyzes the transformation of sulfite to sulfate, a reaction that is necessary for the metabolism of sulfur-containing amino acids, such as cysteine. Molybdenum is required in this process.
If low in molybdenum, one cannot process sulfites. Sulfites then remain in circulation causing asthma attacks, headaches, dizziness and other symptoms. If replenishing your bodily store of molybdenum, it is then plausible that sulfite-related asthma may improve and headaches related to sulfites would also reduce.
Ask your doctor to analyze your urine. If there are sulfites in your urine, that is suggestive of a molybdenum need. There are sulfite urine strips that your doctor can obtain for you. |
