About HomocysteX Plus 60 Vegetarian Capsules - Seeking Health

Why choose HomocysteX Plus by Seeking Health?

The body’s methylation process is vital for formation of essential cell components such as proteins, nucleicacids found in DNA and RNA, and phospholipids that form nerve cell membranes. By transferring methyl groups (three hydrogen atoms bonded to a carbon atom, known as CH3) from one molecule to another, methylation turns on genes, activates enzymes, drives detoxification reactions, influences hormone secretion, and helps maintain normal metabolism of homocysteine, a potentially harmful amino acid metabolite. Unfortunately, poor nutrition, oxidative stress, infections, metabolic defects, and various other factors can impair methylation processes throughout the body. To nutritionally support optimal methylation capacity, this product supplies folate, vitamin B12, B6, B2, and betaine in amounts and forms that are efficiently utilized and well-tolerated by the body. These essential vitamins are found in HomocysteX Plus.

Key Benefits and Actions of Homocystex Plus by Seeking Health -

Supports methylation processes: Most methylation reactions involve the molecule S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) as a methyl group donor. Thus, supporting the formation of SAM can be a viable approach to supporting methylation processes. Folate and vitamin B12 support methylation capacity, as they are essential players in the pathway that produces SAM. Vitamin B2 and betaine also play various different roles to help ensure adequate SAM production, whereas vitamin B6 contributes to methylation processes by facilitating the formation of methyl groups. For optimal nutrient absorption and utilization, this product provides biologically active forms of folate (as Metafolin® ** L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate) and vitamin B12 (as methylcobalamin). These forms are already fully "active” and readily usable, as they do not require further metabolism in the body. Active forms of vitamin B2 (as riboflavin 5’-phosphate) and vitamin B6 (as pyridoxal 5’-phosphate) are also provided for highest absorption and bio-availability.

Helps maintain normal homocysteine metabolism: Optimizing homocysteine metabolism can play an important role in maintaining healthy cardiovascular and cognitive functions. Homocysteine can either be converted to the amino acid cysteine through a series of vitamin B6-dependent reactions or converted to the essential amino acid methionine through a methylation reaction involving folate and vitamin B12. Some individuals are more susceptible to homocysteine accumulation as they are unable to fully convert common forms of folate (such as oxidized folic acid) and B12 (such as cyanocobalamin) into their active forms. In contrast, providing folate and vitamin B12 in their active, methylated forms provides a reliable approach to supporting homocysteine metabolism. Betaine also assists homocysteine regulation through an alternative pathway in which it supplies important methyl groups that allow homocysteine to be safely converted to methionine.

What makes HomocysteX Plus superior to other B-Vitamin supplements on the market? HomocysteX Plus by Seeking Health supplies bioactive forms of four essential B-vitamins together with betaine (also known as trimethylglycine or TMG) to synergistically support methylation processes and normal homocysteine metabolism. This formula is exceptional for those with defective MTHFR genes. Taking just 5-MTHF is not sufficient for those with MTHFR mutations which is why Dr Ben provides these other ingredients to help lower homocysteine and support the methylation cycle.

Wonderful Product!
My two children and I have MTHFR and have been using Metanx. I purchased HomeosysteX Plus and L-5-MTHF 1000 to replace Metanx. Very pleased with the results. Feel like it does a better job than Metanx.

Could definitely see IMMEDIATE changes in my energy level! I was hesitant taking it on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, but I've had no problems with nausea. HomocysteX, where have you been all my life?!

Great Product
Our family has been on a variety of prescription Metafolate. I was a bit confused to see the fillers and artificial colors in these products. My understanding is that Metafolate can help people with the MTHFR gene detox. It made sense to me to avoid things that hindered detoxing. I so appreciate Homocystex! It contains what I need without artificial fillers or colors.

Not Good for People with Reynauds
I am homozygous for MTHFR so i thought this would be an excellent product for me. In addition to the MTHFR problem i also suffer from Reynaud's syndrome. I am very careful about cold exposure and have very few bouts normally. Once I started taking the Homocystex, I started having bouts in both my hands and feet several times a day. I RARELY get them in my feet. I stopped the Homocystex and immediately the bouts stopped, but once i tried taking the Homocystex again they returned. Unfortunately I wasted $27.95 to find out. I hope my experience can help someone else. I will be going back to high doses of Folinic acid (Leucovorin), which helped with my energy level and did not bring on Reynaud's issues. I wish this product had worked for me:(

COMMENT FROM DR BEN:
Sorry to hear that HomocysteX did not work well for you. HomocysteX is a potent product - and when used by people having the right biochemistry - works amazingly well.

Some people - especially those homozygous A1298C - do not seem to do well with HomocysteX. This is likely because they are already methylating fairly well but not getting enough BH4. Having worked with many with A1298C, I have found that HomocysteX does not work well for them. This is not a blanket statement as there are life circumstances, other mutations and environmental factor in play which cause a variation from person to person and this causes some things to work well for some and not for others.

Raynauds tends to do well with increased niacin, magnesium, stress relievers, contrast hot/cold therapy, healing the gut, vitamin D3 to name a few.

For people who are already over methylated, HomocysteX is not for them. A good way to see if you are over methylated is to check your histamine levels. Low histamine = overmethylated according to Dr Pfeiifer.

Pregnant after 4 chemical pregnancies
After having 4 chemical pregnancies I found out I'm homozygous C677t. I started taking this in addition to my prenatal and fish oil supplements and I'm now 5 weeks pregnant. I think the active folic acid may have made this possible. I'm now trying to find a prenatal with L-5-MTHF but will continue to take this following my pregnancy.

Great Product!
This is a very complete product. I have been taking only B-12 and Folic Acid in the methyl forms. I did not realize how important it is to have B-6 and the other ingredients in this product. It makes a world of difference in the way it makes me feel. Thanks for all the great information as well.

HomocysteX and depression
My fiance is heterozygous 1298 and 677 for the MTHFR gene mutation. She saw I was suffering with mild depression and my anti depressants were not working. She suggested that I try HomocysteX by Seeking Health and it is working better than any pharmaceutical that I have ever used.

My depression is gone and I am now getting tested for MTHFR.

  • B-12 absorption problem at 9/12/11 10:40 AM
    • I have an absorption problem, especially with B-12, I normally have to take injections. Will I be able to absorb this form?
    • Hello - This is the most active form one can have for oral vitamin B12 - methylcobalamin. Vitamin B12 requires stomach acid in order to be absorbed. If anyone is taking antacids, vitamin B12, folic acid, calcium and iron are commonly deficient. It is imperative that the acid reflux and gastritis be healed so one can be taken off of antacids. There are also autoimmune conditions which are known to destroy the body's ability to make intrinsic factor. If you have any of these problems, continuing with an injectable form of vitamin B12 is a good idea. You may also open the capsule of Homocystex, mix it in a small amount of water and hold it in your mouth. This will increase the absorption of the vitamin B12 as it will be absorbed sublingually. You can tell if you are absorbing the vitamin B12 in HomocysteX if your homocysteine levels are staying within normal limits and your methylmalonic acid levels are low or in the normal range. • safe for toddler? at 9/12/11 3:41 PM
    • Would this be safe to give my 17 month old daughter ground up in her food?I am homo a1298 copies. So I know she has at least one copy. If this is not safe for her, what can I give her to make sure she is getting enough b vitamins?
    • HomocysteX is quite safe. If you are breastfeeding, it is more ideal for you to take HomocysteX orally and then have your child get it via your breast milk If you are not breast feeding, then I recommend you talk with your doctor about using HomocysteX for your 17 month old daughter. I personally use HomocysteX on my children and have been for some time. One cannot get the most active form of folate from food - it has to be supplemented. The A1298C MTHFR mutation also requires further nutrients beyond what HomocysteX offers. There is a major detoxification and methylation problem for those with A1298C mutations. It is impossible to know which nutrients one with A1298C mutations should take without further methylation lab testing. For your daughter, consider using 1/2 capsule of HomocysteX mixed in some organic applesauce. Give once daily. I do recommend testing your child now for the MTHFR mutation and also Methylation to see what is going on with her. The amount of HomocysteX you and your daughter should take is based upon what lab values are found. Make sure you and your daughter both take a quality fish oil such as Optimal Fish Oil Liquid. It tastes quite good so should be easy for you to mix it in some food or give it to her directly. The Optimal Fish Oil capsules are more potent so they would be better for you to take -or the Optimal Krill Oil would be even better for you. You may poke a hole in the Optimal Krill Oil gel cap and squeeze the contents onto some food for your daughter. This would be very beneficial. In health, Dr Ben

  • dosage at 9/24/11 7:57 AM
    • Before placing my order I would like to know what the dosage is for my daughter who is hoping to conceive again after # 3 miscarriages. She is homo A1298 and my husband who is compound hetero c677t and A1298C. I haven't been tested yet but I assume I'm at least positive for the A1298C. I'll be placing multiple orders.I read somewhere that for each copy you should take 1000 mcg of folate. Is this true?
    • Hello - Those with homozygous A1298C tend to be loaded with heavy metals and other chemicals because they have a decreased ability to get them out of their body. This may be a significant factor which is not normally addressed by physicians. I recommend you consider a prenatal with active folate in it such as Prenatal Pro: http://www.healthegoods.com/prenatal-pro-180-vegetarian-capsules.html I recommend your daughter look at her methylation profile via a lab test by Doctor's Data: http://www.healthegoods.com/methylation-profile-doctors-data.html It would be a benefit also to identify exactly what her nutritional needs are and potential toxicities via the ION Panel by Metametrix. This is an expensive test but it is highly effective. I want you to know that I do NOT profit from this lab test. http://www.healthegoods.com/ion-profile-blood-urine-metametrix.html I am available to do a consult with her once we get the results back for this ION Panel. I do recommend she consider it. Insurance companies do not cover it. http://www.healthegoods.com/consult.html I also recommend she look at her progesterone levels to make sure they are healthy. Talk with her doctor about this. You need to have your daughter test her partner for MTHFR mutations also. You need to know what the potential risk is of her baby obtaining another MTHFR mutation from the father. I do not recommend taking just folate for those with MTHFR. I recommend taking only the active forms of folate which are 5-MTHF or L-5-MTHF. HomocysteX contains L-5-MTHF You should be taking a multivitamin that contains the active 5-MTHF along with the methylcobalamin and active B6. If you don't, your MTHFR mutation is not allowing full absorption and utilization of these nutrients thereby causing dysfunction. I recommend you and your husband consider Optimal Multivitamin by Seeking Health: http://www.healthegoods.com/optimal-multivitamin-240-vegetarian-capsules-seeking-health.html Consider 3 capsules in the AM with breakfast, 3 at lunch and 2 more with a snack around 3 PM for ideal energy and health. If that is too hard for you - no worries - just try and get 3 capsules in at breakfast and 3 at lunch. Do not take after 3 PM as it may interfere with sleep. HomocysteX is a potent formulation which has an unique formulation for lowering homocysteine and providing nutrients for methylation. I am not sure what the general recommendation of 1,000 of MTHF is for each mutation. I do not think there is a set recommendation as each individual is unique, consumes different foods, exposed to different things in the environment and have different levels of MTHFR function. This is why I recommend the Methylation Profile by Doctor's Data. This way you can see if one is methylating well and eliminating homocysteine and s-adenosylhomocysteine. Once you know the results of the Methylation Profile, you adjust your nutrient intake accordingly. Should you need more L-5-MTHF than is found in the HomocysteX, you may take L-5-MTHF directly: http://www.healthegoods.com/l-5-mthf.html This is an effective way to adjust your MTHF levels and is also less expensive - and safer. Optimal Krill Oil is highly recommended to help combat damage caused to the cell membranes from chemical exposures and heavy metal exposures. Optimal Krill Oil contains a fantastic antioxidant which is needed in such a pro-oxidative mutation: http://www.healthegoods.com/optimal-krill-oil.html NAC is a nutrient that should be considered for all who are not pregnant. This helps to mobilize and eliminate chemicals and heavy metals out of the body: http://www.healthegoods.com/nac-n-acetyl-l-cysteine-90-vegetarian-capsules-seeking-health.html Probiotics are also a crucial component to help bind some toxins that come in through the food or drink. Research shows that some strains of bacteria actually help bind BPA and eliminate them from the body. I recommend your daughter, you and your husband take 1-2 capsules of ProBiota 12 nightly after dinner. You may likely notice improved digestion, less gas and bloating, improved immune function, improved skin health and less fatigue. http://www.healthegoods.com/probiota-12-maximum-support-50-billion-cfus-twelve-species-probiotic-60-vegetarian-capsules-seeking-health.html Should you have further questions, please do ask. I do recommend a free 15 minute consult as well should you desire that. In health, Dr Ben

  • Already converted? at 9/27/11 9:12 AM
    • Hi - I just want to be really clear: this product is the already converted b vitamin stuff that MTHFR patients need, correct? My body doesn't have to methylate anything here?

My doctor prescribed Deplin (which I know is missing the TMG), but is open to me using whatever I can find. She wasn't sure that this product is already converted (but, I don't think she checked it out).

      Thanks for any clarification!

    • Hello - HomocysteX contains the L-5-MTHF form of folic acid. The L-5-MTHF is the methylated form which those having MTHFR mutation need. Your body does not need to methylate any ingredients found in HomocysteX as they are already methylated. The vitamin B12 is in the form of methylcobalamin. The folic acid is in the form of L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate. The vitamin B6 is also already phosphorylated as is the vitamin B2 making them highly absorbable as well. The added TMG, which is betaine, bypasses the MTHFR mutation completely making it very effective in homocysteine metabolism. I have kept the level of L-5-MTHF at 800 mcg as the other ingredients found in HomocysteX greatly support homocysteine metabolism. Should your doctor want you to take additional methylated folic acid, consider L-5-MTHF 1000 by Seeking Health. Each capsule provides 1,000 mcg of methylated folic acid in the form of L-5-MTHF. http://www.healthegoods.com/l-5-mthf.html This makes HomocysteX an affordable solution and helpful to many because not everyone needs such high doses of methylated folic acid. L-5-MTHF is an expensive and potent ingredient. Should one need additional methylated folic acid, it is easy to obtain with L-5-MTHF by Seeking Health. In health, Dr Ben

  • Miscarriages, Rheumatoid Arthritis at 10/6/11 8:09 AM
    • I have a friend who has suffered several miscarriages. She has also been diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Could RA come from the MTHFR gene mutation? Should she be tested for this?
Would Homocystex benefit people who do not have the gene mutation?
      Thanks,
      Diana
    • Hi Diana - I'm sorry to hear about your friend experiencing miscarriages. Rheumatoid arthritis has numerous causes but the good news is I can help her completely overcome it if she is willing to make lifestyle and dietary changes, she may want to schedule a consult with me: http://www.healthegoods.com/consult.html The MTHFR mutation is highly prevalent in the population - especially some specific populations like Italians and Mexicans. HomocysteX may benefit people who do not have MTHFR if they experience elevated homocysteine, B12 deficiency, depression, chemically sensitive, have chronic disease, low methylation and others. If your friend has had several miscarriages, she should definitely be tested for MTHFR mutations: http://www.healthegoods.com/mthfr-test.html She should also be tested for poor methylation as methylation is the critical biochemical process for the human body: http://www.healthegoods.com/methylation-profile-doctors-data.html Best, Dr Ben

  • MTHFR other clotting genes, serious family history of stroke and heart attack at 10/13/11 6:12 AM
    • Dear Dr Ben

I have recently been diagnosed with

      MTHFR (C677T) mt/mt (homozygous)
      PAI-1 4G/4G
      EPCR (4600 A>G /EPCR 4678 G>C) (A/A, C/G)A1/A2

I am trying to conceive one blocked tube, and the tests above were done by a fertility clinic because I have a family history of strokes /heart disease. My mother has alzheimers/dementia caused by blockage of a carotid artery in the neck and lack of oxygen to the brain. She has had 3 strokes and now has an extremely low standard of living. My Dad had 3 heart attacks, triple heart bypass and is dead. I have both genes from my parents homozygous and 4G/4G.

I have been told to take baby aspirin 75mg daily. Also 5mg of folic acid and clexane during pregnancy. From what I have read you would recommend HomocysteX is that correct? Is there anything else I should take? Is 800mcg of
Folate (as Metafolin L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate) enough or should I take L-5-MTHF 1000 as well?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, I am in the U.K and my general practitioner is not very helpful. I will be doing ivf in the future and would also want to take the right thing for the rest of my life. I don't think I have a dormant gene considering what I have just seen my parents go through.
      thanks so much
    • Hi there - Thank you for your question. Given your history and complexity, I highly recommend a consult. http://www.healthegoods.com/consult.html HomocysteX may be beneficial along with additional L-5-MTHF. It is best to monitor labs and symptoms in order to obtain an ideal amount of nutrients. Too much or too little can pose problems. Those with homozygous C677T mutations have been taking 2-3 capsules of HomocyteX twice daily. The active folate in HomocysteX is much more bioavailable than 5 mg of standard folic acid - especially with a homozygous MTHFR mutation. Baby aspirin is a good idea to take. Flow Fx may be indicated as well as it helps break down Fibrin which is the building block of blood clots. Flow Fx contains 50 mg of Nattokinase in a quality form without fillers and flow agents. On my www.MTHFR.net website, a woman recently commented about nattokinase: "I wanted to comment because I have had several miscarriages and want to share what I did with my last pregnancy and kept her alive. I was on heparin for 3 preg. and lovenox for the next all ending in miscarriages. I added Nattokinase and she lived! Follow what Dr. Ben says paying special attention to include nattokinase. I was not on any heparin or lovenox, only nattokinase, and baby aspirin. Blessings and well wishes, Tami" Nutrients recommended for those with homozygous MTHFR mutations: Optimal Krill Oil, NAC, Active CoQH, Flow Fx, Optimal Vitamin C, HomocysteX, Optimal Multivitamin, ProBiota 12 Powder. These may be found here: http://www.healthegoods.com/brands/seeking-health.html I also recommend the addition of Xylitol Gum as it helps prevent cavities in newborn children which is amazing. http://www.healthegoods.com/xylitol-fruit-gum-biogenesis-ear-infection.html I am available for consults should you need more individual information. I am happy to help - even those overseas may schedule consults. In health, Dr Ben

  • Homocystex at 10/23/11 10:21 PM
    • I have heard that patients with MTHFR should take these supplements 3x a day. Is there any reason that could be too much, in your opinion?
    • Hello - It depends. Depends on: - Age - # MTHFR mutations - Diet - Lifestyle - Other supplements taken I believe the least amount is ideal but you have to know what the least amount is. The Methylation Profile helps determine that. I always recommend starting out with 1 capsule of HomocysteX for a few days, see how you feel and then increase from there. I do not recommend taking HomocysteX within 5 hours of going to bed as it may keep you awake. 3 capsules is a pretty standard dosage of HomocysteX. In this case, I'd recommend 2 in the AM and 1 capsule at lunch or around 2 PM or so. Or - you may take one on getting up, one at lunch and another around 5 PM. This way your blood levels of these critical nutrients stay where they should be and you absorb more of the nutrients as well. In health, Dr Ben

  • MTHFR program at 10/29/11 4:07 PM
    • Hello,

I love all the information on this issue on your site. From what I can see you seem to recommend the Homocystex, Krill oil and NAC along with a good vitamin and probiotic to assist with the MTHFR issue. I have both types of this defect. I have heard that Same is a great product to take also for methylation. Do you think that it would also be helpful or is it really necessary to add to the basic items already mentioned? I want to do the best I can for the issue, but don't want to do anything that is not needed.

      Thanks, Sharri
    • Sharri - You are right in that I commonly recommend the following for adults with MTHFR mutations: HomocysteX, Optimal Krill Oil and NAC along with Optimal Multivitamin and ProBiota 12. Some people do great with this while others need to have it altered. HomocysteX contains nutrients which naturally lead to making SAMe. It is not good to take too much of any nutrient - especially methylators like SAMe - as it can cause ill effects. I always recommend starting simply and then expanding on that as long as you feel good or you are noticing improvement. If you take too many things at once and you feel not so hot, you do not know what is causing it. Also, if you are taking a lot of things at once, you may feel great initially for a few weeks, but then may get not so hot feelings down the road. This requires alteration in dosages and what you are taking. If you or anyone that you know of are homozygous C677T or compound heterozygous A1298C and C677T, then taking Flow Fx may be beneficial. These mutations are more prone to clotting and Flow Fx help reduce fibrin. Fibrin is a main building block for blood clots. You can tell if you need further methylation support by ordering the Methylation Profile. http://www.healthegoods.com/methylation-profile-doctors-data.html If you want to know deficiencies and excesses along with levels of fatty acids and metabolites, the ION Panel by Metametrix is highly recommended: http://www.healthegoods.com/ion-profile-blood-urine-metametrix.html The ION Panel is expensive but it truly helps pinpoint issues quickly and effectively. It basically removes the guessing by a fair amount. So in short, no - I do not recommend the SAMe or Methionine above what you are taking currently - not unless you are still experiencing symptoms. If you are not improving the way you'd like, I highly recommend consulting with me so we can alter what you are doing and get you on the right track. http://www.healthegoods.com/consult.html Again - the ION Panel comes highly recommended as well. To let you know, I do NOT profit on the ION Panel. It simply is an expensive test. In health, Dr Ben

  • MTHFR c677t and recently diagnosed with Graves disease, I am 5 months postpartum at 11/14/11 2:15 PM
    • I am taking Deplin, B-12 injections and a baby aspirin for my genetic defect. I am taking iodine, lithium and Betain HCL for the Graves. In addition I am taking D3, calc & mag caplet, mineral supplement and glutathione. I am miserable, my joint point is awful. I can actually feel my adrenal spots in my hands and feet hurt. I know an adrenal issue is at hand. I also had the MMR vaccination the day after giving birth..not in my right mind(not lucid)!! I cannot produce enough milk to feed my baby, at times I can feel my thyroid pulsing. Please, please help. I have Dr.'s that walk the line and are not thankfully throwing a bunch of pharmaceuticals at me. But nothing is really working here....
    • Hello - Sorry you are not feeling well. If you have Grave's and are taking iodine, that may be a problem. Talk with your doctor about this. I highly recommend avoiding wheat completely as it is linked to autoimmune thyroid disorders like Grave's. Glutathione could be making your joints hurt as you may be detoxing too quickly. You may be taking too much methylfolate. Deplin has a lot. The MMR vaccine likely has mercury in it which is known to shut down a major biochemical pathway - MTR. This pathway is needed to detoxify and make methyl groups needed for neurotransmitters. Consider taking 1 capsule of HomocysteX the first day and then 1 capsule twice a day. • I recently ordered HomocysteX and when I opened the bottle I noticed the product has a very strong odor, sort of like sour milk. I just wanted to check if this was normal or could there be something wrong with it?

      Thank you.
    • Hello - The HomocysteX has a strong odor due to the TMG. This is a sour smelling and tasting nutrient. The color of slight orange is due to the methylcobalamin. Thank you for checking! Best Dr Ben
