About the Author

"Meditation can give you that which nothing else can give you.  It introduces you to yourself"

- Swami Rama

In this practical guide to inner life, Swami Rama teaches us how to slip beyond the mental turbulence of our ordinary thought processes into an infinite reservoir of consiousness from which we can draw guidance, creative power, joy and tranquiliity.

This program for Progress in Meditation outlined here opens the door to internal resources we have always had at our disposal, but have not been able to access.  These are the techniques the sages of India have used from time immemorial to live in harmony with the world around them, to find strength to face life's difficulties and to know themselves.

From the Introduction . . .

"This book was written to provide a clear, systematic manual of the basic techniques of meditation.  It is meant to give you a progressive, step-by-step approach that is practical rather than theoretical or philosophical.  It also introduces you the most important practices used in preparing yourself for meditation.  These preliminary practices will greatly enhace the quality of your meditation."

About the Author:

One of the greatest adepts, teachers, writers and humanitarians of the 20th century, Swami Rama is the founder of the Himalayan Institute.  Born in Northern India, he was raised from early childhood by a Himalayan sage, Bengali Baba.  Under the guidance of his master he traveled from monastery to monastery and studied with a variety of Himalayan saints and sages, including his grandmaster who was living in a remote region of Tibet.  In addition to this intense spiritual training, Swami Rama received higher education in both India and Europe.  From 1949 to 1952, he held the prestigious position of Shankaracharya of Karvipitham in South India.  Thereafter, he returned to his master to receive further training at his cave monstery, and finally in 1969, came to the US where he founded the Himalayan Institute.  His best known work, Living with Himalayan Masters, reveals the many facets of this singular adept and demonstrates his embodiment of the living tradition of the East.
