Forced Chemotherapy?

Some real estate judge is forcing Abraham, who has cancer of his lymph system, to re-enter chemotherapy against Abraham's will. Abraham researched which treatment he wanted and is choosing an alternate approach.

Our Neurology professor said it very well - something to the effect that physicians think patients in intense pain with fibromyalgia are faking it. Then our professor went on to say that if a person does not experience pain themselves, they will not believe it real.

Chemo is not fun at all - it may be effective for some cancers but if Abraham wants to choose a different path, by all means it is HIS CHOICE. Not some judge's.

Abraham - you're right - you absolutely should be in charge of your body and choose which treatment you feel is best for you - even if it is no treatment. It is your choice.

I am highly thankful for this family standing ground. Health is a personal choice that should be governed by the own individual or if under age, by the parents.

How can other individuals speak for the life of another? First Amendment? What about freedom of choice?

I think the real fact of the matter is not the choice by the family but the power of the American Medical Association. The AMA is pushing very very hard to make it difficult for naturopathic physicians to gain licensure. The AMA knows there is mounting pressure against current medical practices and alternative medicine is booming full speed ahead with people happily recovering from their ills.

I attend Bastyr University - the USA's most respected natural health university. I will be a ND end of June 2006 and I will face scrutiny my entire life by some medical professionals. That is fine.

I must say that ND's and MD's here in Seattle get along quite well. We work with oncologists all the time communicating back and forth about the patient and determining what is best. That is how medicine should be done - a teamwork effort. MD's for the surgeries and major drugs if needed and the ND's for supportive therapies and sometimes the only therapy if not cancer. By law, in WA state, ND's cannot diagnose cancer nor work on a cancer patient solely. Which is fine - I respect that.

I dont respect the court demanding Abraham to do something against his will on his own body.

Abraham - you're a good man. Stand tall and set a precedence. Be well and kick ass.

Support the new bill - tell your congress people about it.

Nausea? Many Causes and Effective Resolutions

Ever wonder why newly pregnant women - and some unlucky ones for the entire pregnancy - have nausea and at times vomiting?

Liver congestion for one and low protein diets for another. However, most of the time nausea due to pregnancy may be due to liver congestion.

The liver gets overwhelmed having to process all those excess hormones floating around in the blood. This elevates the liver enzymes and then those spill out into the blood, tissue space and small intestine. These elevated liver enzymes cause nausea.

Elevated liver enzymes may not show up well in the blood tests as blood volume increases so much during pregnancy. Thus, liver enzymes may be elevated but hard to tell as now there is a larger ratio of blood volume to liver enzymes.

I found homeopathy works quite well with morning sickness and nausea of pregnancy. Two doses of Colchicine 30C helped my wife out tremendously during her nausea of pregnancy - in fact, it resolved it completely. This is not to say Colchicine will help all nausea of pregnancy - there are numerous homeopathics which do and the person must match the homeopathic remedy otherwise it will not work or the individual will prove the remedy causing more distress.

Liver support is useful but one must be careful with herbs and supplements during pregnancy we don't want to harm baby.

So if a person who is not pregnant gets nauseated - what to do?

Well - if protein intake is less than 0.8 grams/kilogram of body weight, then add protein to the diet. So a person who weighs 150 pounds has to eat about 70 grams of protein a day. That really is not that much. Best to space it out over morning and lunch and lighter protein at dinner. This allows less sugar cravings during the day, less weight gain, less liver processing of protein in the evening allowing the liver to detox the blood and less mood swings and more stable mind function.

If one consumes enough protein, and you are still nauseated, then think if you have reason for your liver enzymes to be elvevated:

  • taking many medications - overworks the liver to metabolize them
  • taking hormone replacement - overworks the liver to metabolize them
  • eating fatty foods and/or high sugar foods - overworks the liver
  • high stress - high metabolite formation and decreases blood to liver
  • alcohol - decreases glutathione, increases liver enzymes highly!
  • smoking - loads of toxins to process
  • pregnant - overworks the liver due to many hormones
  • poor digestion - due to low hcl in the stomach due to stress when eating or meds or h pylori
For many of those, simply changing your lifestyle will help relieve the nausea. Granted pregnancy and many medications may not be desireable to change. For those which find lifestyle changes to be difficult, supplementation to help increase liver function may be an answer.

There are other issues which may cause nausea of course which are extremely important - such as possible kidney disease and heart attack onset to name a couple. Heart attack and nausea is a large warning sign in women especially but men may have this symptom as well. Kidney disease may cause nause as well.

So it is complicated but for a good naturopathic physician or MD, it is not that bad to distinguish the cause and effect. I guess that is why there are docs on the planet.

It was an excellent day in the clinic today. One of our HIV patients with horrific nausea now has his life back he said. His nausea was bothering him to the point he quit his job. After seeing his lab results and hearing his history, we prescribed him liver support herbs and digestive acids. He is a new man - and a very happy one. I love what I do for a living. Very rewarding. At times it is extremely difficult and emotional but the good days like today make it all worth it.

Gotta catch some zzz's as I'm playing doc again tomorrow.

Hypothyroid and Not Stable On Meds?

We're seeing patients with hypothyroidism more and more in the teaching clinic. We're also seeing them having to ramp up on their Thyroxin drug every couple months as they still have hypothyroidism according to the lab tests.

At the original dose, the patient seems to do well for about a week or two. Then they feel their symptoms come back again. Doc retests and the blood tests show hypothyroidism. So the Doc ramps up the Thyroxin. The patient then feels good for about another week or so and then begins to crash with the original hypothyroid symptoms again.

This continues to happen for years for unlucky ones. For the lucky ones, this cycle stops in its tracks after a few months worth of chasing proper thyroid function.

What to do?

There are a few things your doc can check:

Thyroid Antibodies - is your body attacking your own thyroid and causing it to be unstable? Find out by ordering the anti-TPO and anti-TG tests. If hypothyroid and one or two of these are elevated, then you have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Not too worry - a good doc can truely help you out here.

Adrenal Function - are you stressed like nuts, get a bit dizzy when you stand up or get out of bed, tough to get out of bed in the morning due to exhaustion? If so, your doc may want to order the DHEA-S test to see how your adrenal glands are functioning. Physical exam tests such as hippus, CVA tenderness, orthostatic hypotension also help pin point adrenal fatigue.

Celiac Disease - you go to the bathroom and have mucousy stools, diarrhea mixed with constipation at times, gas and bloating after many meals especially noticeable after eating wheat or any gliadin containing foods? If so, your doc may want to order the celiac panel.

All three of the above may disrupt thyroid function and if they are not discovered and addressed, thyroid function may not stablize. It takes only one of the above three to cause disruption in thyroid function - not all three.

Each of the above have pretty solid treatments which is great news. The even better news is if you suffer from having to keep ramping up on your thyroid meds and still not improving, these three other conditions may be affecting it and if resolved or contained, then the likelihood of having to keep ramping up may disappear.

Keep in mind there are other issues as well which may cause one to have to chase the proper dosage of thyroid meds. Celiac disease, adrenal issues, and autoimmunity are simply three.

I will explain why these may be indicated a bit more. At the moment, I gotta jet to clinic for a 13 hour day. Arrrgh.

Detoxification: Questions & Answers

Someone sent me over these questions and I thought it would be useful to post them here. Granted they are first draft responses but overall I believe many will find them useful.

Do feel free to post comments or questions in the comment area and Ill get back to you.

Why is detox necessary?
A detox is necessary as the body is bombarded daily by toxic exposures - from air, water, food, industry, manufacturing, drugs, stress and others. Processing toxic substances requires necessary nutrients, sleep, breathing and sweating. Without any one of these, detoxification is limited. When detoxification is limited, the body burden of chemicals accumulates further and disrupts biological processes. At first these biological processes may simply be a skin rash, head cold or headache. Then as months go by and sleep gets worse due to skin rashes and headaches, toxins further accumulate and cause deeper disruptions which affect memory, digestion, energy and circulation. At this level, the individual gets even less sleep, less proper diet and is severely depleted of the proper nutrients for detoxification. Now the body requires even more nutrients to detoxify the daily exposures along with the accumulated body burden over the last months or even years. A few more months or another year of daily exposures built upon those already accumulated, the individual will likely have serious hormone disturbances, joint pains, short term memory loss, mild seizures, and likely begin to suffer many days lost at work. With that said, it is blatantly necessary to detoxify properly often and reduce the daily toxic exposures in order to live a long healthy functional life.

What toxins are stored in the fat tissue that can be removed?
Fat stores toxins are numerous. Pesticides, herbicides, solvents, plastics (phthalates), heavy metals are some key players in fat stored toxins. These can be removed by a properly trained physician effectively. Keep in mind though that while they can be removed, they also can be replaced quite simply. The environment in which we live is toxic. It is imperative that detoxification occur when needed and properly.

What are the ways to detox?
Simply -

  • Deep abdominal breathing - our lungs are large detoxification organs breathing out volatile gases and bringing necessary oxygen to all our tissues.
  • Exercise - brings oxygen-rich blood to all tissues which not only delivers needed oxygen but also carries out and removes metabolites which are the body's natural waste products. Exercise also brings peace of mind thereby reducing stress. Exercise also induces sweating which pulls toxins from the blood and body tissues and places them through the lungs and skin via sweat.
  • Meditation - being calm reduces stress. Stress is a highly catabolic or destructive state creating mass metabolic waste. This metabolic waste builds up and slows detoxification. It slows detoxification as blood vessels become narrowed and reduced blood flow to the liver, skin, brain and numerous other key organs. This creates a toxic body burden
  • Colonic or enema - if one is in excess with a large parasite infestation, chronic colitis or consumes much processed foods and little fiber, colon irrigation may be useful. Inserting water up into the colon quickly removes toxic bile and other toxins which are soluble in stool.
  • Fasting - not eating anything but water can be done under supervision for numerous days or weeks. This method allows the body's organs to focus solely on detoxification.
  • Sauna - daily saunas for one to five hours under supervision are useful for removing the fat soluble toxins through sweat.
  • Hot baths - daily hot baths under guidance are a convenient method to detoxify at home. Hot baths induce sweating which helps remove fat soluble toxins.

Why to use bath instead of other treatments?
Bathing can be done by most anyone at home. Bathing is relaxing and can create intense sweating followed by an excellent nights sleep. Deep breathing while in the bath along with meditation and reduced stress all account for an effective accumulative method of detoxification. Bath temperatures can also be varied which determine the intensity and duration of a detox. After sweating in a hot bath, one can lie down for one to two more hours and continue the intense sweating. Sweating post-bath increases the effectiveness of detoxification as it mobilizes even more fat soluble toxins out through the skin.

Why do I need moor mud in the bath? What does moor mud do in detox?

Moor mud in the bath is needed for a few reasons. One: a natural moor mud has natural cellulose fibers which insulate the water. Insulating the water is needed to maintain a hot temperature and induce a longer more effective sweat. These same fibers also create a suspension in the water and surround the person in the bath. Being surrounded by cellulose fibers allows the bath temperature to be quite hot while it may not seem that hot for the bather. There are also humic acids which have been shown in research to bind heavy metals. While the bather is sweating, some toxic metals bind to the humic acids. This limits re-absorption of the toxic metals back through the skin.

What does "chelation" mean?
Chelation means using an introduced carrier to draw out a chemical or toxin via the urine, sweat or feces. The chemical or toxin is bound to the carrier in a ring-like structure. Chelation must be supervised by a physician as kidney or liver damage may occur.

What is the correct procedure and how long does it take to detox with moor mud bath?
The correct procedure depends on the symptom picture of the individual, age, type of exposures, time of year, type of medical conditions and if pregnant. There is no one set proper detoxification procedure.

For the general population who do not have any medical conditions, not pregnant, and are not overly tired, a moor mud detoxification procedure may be helpful in reducing overall toxic body burden.

The best time to detox is in the spring. The worst time to detoxify is in the winter. A standard detox protocol using moor mud:
  1. Eat healthfully.
  2. Sleep 8-10 hours a night
  3. Exercise prior to bathing in moor mud [this induces sweating in individuals who do not sweat much and makes the bathing more effective]
  4. Take healthy oils up to 2 tablespoons a day - like olive oil, walnut oil, flax seed oil, fish oil. [this protects the brain and cell membranes from circulating solvents and other toxins]
  5. Bathe daily up to 30 days in hot water up to 103 degrees F for a maximum of 20 minutes. Use 1/2 tube of moor mud per bath for average height and weight. For larger persons who are obese or are well-built, a full 1 liter tube may be needed.
  6. After bathing in the hot moor mud bath, put on long sleeve cotton shirt and cotton pants. Then lay under warm bedding for another 1-2 hours to continue sweating. After sweating for 1-2 hours, shower off well as the toxins must be removed from your skin. Do not use soap.
  7. Detailed bathing protocol is available.
  8. Moor mud bathing detox is done when the individual feels more youthful and healthy.

How often do I need to detox?
Varies for people. Some people like to detox a little daily by meditating, deep abdominal breathing and exercising. Some people detoxify once per year using an intense detoxification protocol with supplementation, sweating and colonics. Some people fast once per week sustaining only with water. It also depends on occupation, local environment and past/present exposures.

What else do I need to do to keep free of toxins?

Traditional Naturopath or Naturopathic Physician? BIG difference.

There is a difference - a big one.

Careful of certifications like this:

This certificate is received by those who do distant learning online for about 3 months and then they call themselves naturopaths. This angers me as they may seriously harm people - not to mention they seriously discredit those naturopathic physicians who graduate from accredited 4 year ND schools - of which there are only about 4 in the USA. There are also a couple in Canada - which I am not fully aware of their standards - but I know the former president of one of the schools and he is highly credible so likely those schools are good.

If visiting a naturopath and you are not aware of these potentially dangerous ones, ask where they graduated from. If they graduated from the colleges listed below - you are fine:
  • Bastyr University
  • National College of Naturopathic Medicine
  • Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine
  • and maybe Connecticut College of Naturopathic Medicine
If they graduated anywhere else and claim to be a naturopath, then I caution you.

In licensed states, these unaccredited naturopaths cannot practice legally - whereas naturopaths graduating from one of the above schools - do practice legally.

Be safe. Be educated.

Naturopathic medicine is a booming profession and many people want to get on the bus - even without proper training. That is not good for anyone.

For more information about naturopathic physicians, contact:
American Association of Naturopathic Professionals.

Compare the Naturopathic Physicians Board Review Examiner:
Two Part Exam Series: Basic Sciences Exam and Clinical Exams

to the potentially dangerous Traditional Naturopaths Board Review Examiner:
Examination in Traditional Naturopathy

Quite a difference - and the name is the same. Dangerous? Yes.

Support licensure of naturopathic physicians in your state to protect you and your loved ones from badly practiced medicine.

Autism Treatment: The Main Effective Protocols

I was inspired today.

A five year old autistic boy came in today bouncing around the room like he had 43 cups of some Starbuck's fuel.

It was tough taking a brief case history before I stepped out and spoke with the lead physician on staff about how to proceed with the boy's treatment.

We both knew from the history that the boy is loaded with mercury, gold and cyanide. These all came from his mother in utero. His mother worked as an engineer in a gold mine and was exposed to high high levels of mercury, cyanide and of course gold. Five years later, she got pregnant and brought a beautiful autistic boy into the world.

Now, knowing he needs to be treated by chelating heavy toxic metals, she made an appointment with us. She has also made appointments to undergo chelation as well - her second round in 20 years.

Bottom line is this:
There is research showing a direct link between mercury exposure and autism.
There is research showing a direct link between gliadin exposure and autism.

So what to do:
Visit a naturopathic doctor who specializes in environmental medicine or a MD who specializes in environmental medicine. There docs must understand the link between autism and mercury along with the link between autism and gliadin. If they do not, find another doctor who does.

I highly encourage you to read this incredible well thought-out autism treatment protocol paper written by the most respected docs:
Treatment Options for Mercury/Metal Toxicity in Autism and Related Developmental Disabilities:
Consensus Position Paper

Various Effective Treatments for Autism:
Treatment of Autism

Locate a trained physician to treat your autistic child:
Physicians Specifically Trained for Treating Autistic Patients

An overall excellent website where these links were taken:
Autism Research Institute

There is hope. Your child will likely improve greatly using specific known protocols by trained physicians.

Autism is one of many growing conditions due to all the environmental hazards we face on our planet. If we are to limit the onslaught of chemicals, it must be known to Congress that chemical companies must be seriously controlled. This includes pesticides, herbicides, plastics and others.

As a future naturopathic physician - in June 2007 - I look forward to the day when my doors open and many patients walk out well. If you're not autistic but have numerous conditions which seem to baffle many physicians, you likely have an underlying environmental condition disrupting your system.

You can feel better.

You and your child will feel better.

Bad Teeth? Chronically Ill? Connection? YES.

The last four patients I have seen in the teaching clinic have proved to me how essential it is to get a dental history. Dental history meaning: mercury fillings, copper fillings, root canals, tooth abcesses, bleeding gums and so on.

One patient had 12 mercury amalgams, 5 root canals and complaints of polycystic ovarian syndrome, hypothyroidism, depression, severe weight gain, intense abdominal pain, IBS, rosacea to name a couple. She just came in for her first visit so no treatment yet. We referred her to a gastroenterologist for a colonoscopy to rule out some dangerous conditions first. She is due to come in soon and we will begin our treatment plan. Ill let you know what we find.

Another was happy-go-lucky .com guy making his fortunes and then a mercury filling came out and he swallowed half of it while the rest he took out on his finger. He had numerous mercury amalgams and now is so ill he has not worked in the past year. He has been suffering seizures, chronic fatigue syndrome and night sweats. We did a urinary challenge test on him - high in mercury. Surprise. He has been tested up and down and all around by the MD's - no luck finding any cause of seizures or his other issues. After 2 months of working with us, he is already functioning much better: seizures have gone down, night sweats have stopped, energy up.

A female who has had numerous mercury amalgams, umpteen root canals, teeth removed has issues of intense gut pain for 15 years so bad that she has been taking morphine for 10 years, joint pains and fatigue. Recent onset of tooth pain again. Went to the dentist as I asked about her dental history and they found a raging abscess in one tooth. They drained the abscess and did what they do. Now she is without gut pain, feeling like she is on cloud 9 and full of joy. Connection? Looks like. She had no fever or other signs of infection. It was all dental history which triggered the healing outcome.

Another patient - female - complaints of joint pain, bad breath, hypthyroid and short term memory loss. History - major root canal, 1 mercury amalgam taken out improperly by a dentist and has a large one currently. Have yet to do a mercury urinary challenge on her. Will do soon.

My point:
If you are suffering of short term memory loss, fatigue, low thyroid, abdominal pains, joint pains or other issues which your doctor cannot find the cause of, you must think about your dental history. If you have had root canals, if you have had mercury amalgams, if you have mercury amalgams currently, then you are likely brewing a nice pot of anaerobic bacteria in your mouth. They have been shown to emit horrific toxic gases and waste products directly into your blood.

Your mouth is right there by your brain and heart. It is no place to mess around.

Get your teeth looked at by a holistic dentist or by a dentist who specializes in removal of mercury amalgams and also knows not to perform root canals - but rather pull the bad tooth along with the peridontal ligament and put in a bridge.

Move Over for the Crazy Healers, Docs!

This piece is written by Mark Morford - his sister just graduated top of her ND class at Bastyr University. Soon, in 11 months, I will be finally graduating from Bastyr as an ND as well - so what Mark writes below is an inspiration. Thank you, Mark.

Mark attended the graduation ceremony and from reading his column, I gather he was quite impressed. Enjoy the column:

My college graduation ceremony sent roughly 300 sunbaked, slightly baffled, exasperatingly verbose, Shakespeare-drunk UC Berkeley English grads out into the world without the slightest clue as to what the hell they were going to do with their lives.

Most, I imagine, became teachers. Or maybe attorneys, for which I hereby apologize. A few became authors. Many found no immediate work being brilliant Milton-quoting wits at celebrity parties and hence promptly moved right back in with their parents. They went on not to figure out their lives until they were roughly 37 years old, at which point they realized they'd been managing that particular Starbucks for about 12 years already, which prompted them to say, "OK, I guess this is it. I mean, I suppose it could be worse. I mean, hell, at least I'm not a former
communications major who's now stocking little pink socklets at a Baby Gap in Tulsa, am I right? Damn right."

But never mind all that. Here is the good news: Thankfully, amid the tens of thousands of bewildered college grads leaving the hallowed halls of the academy every spring to face the Thunderdome of Brutal Reality, not all such ceremonies are equally fraught.

I am here to tell you, I have recently witnessed a different sort of matriculation, a different sort of human launch. It was the 2006 graduation ceremony of Bastyr University in Seattle, perhaps the finest, most respected and most difficult naturopathic medical school in the nation. And it was something to behold.
Bastyr is an alternative medical academy. It is perhaps most famous for ranking out world-class naturopathic doctors who, for the first four years of their studies, work through the same basic, science-intense material as their Western-trained counterparts, all about cadavers, biology, hard-core physiology and all the accompanying anxiety and viciousattrition rate for first- and second-year students who just can't hack theinsane pace and staggering workload.

But after four years, the ND students switch gears and move toward the real work of alternative healing, consisting of two or three more years of natural medicines and wellness and whole-person treatment; compassion, prevention and organic systems; and an astounding array of ancient nontoxic practices, none of which resort to slicing the flesh and loading it up with chemicals as a first mode of therapy.

It's a funky school. One part Birkenstock, one part slick modern facility, one part extremely rigorous university, one part spiritual quest, and all parts full of slightly oddball, uniquely attuned students who have dared to say, "Screw the traditional Western medical establishment and let's see if we can't try something more, you know, whole." Crazy, isn't it?

(I attended the ceremony, by the way, because my brilliant and goofy older sister was graduating from Bastyr's naturopathic doctoral program at thetop of her class, and it was she who delivered the commencement speech for the ND grads, which is amazing and wondrous in its own right. But that's another column.)

Oh, make no mistake: The Bastyr ceremony was a bit tedious. It was slow and formal and there were lots of people parading around in the typical black gowns. There were long speeches and staid processions and meek piano music, and the whole thing took well over three hours, during which the primary challenge became escaping the tightly packed aisles to find a restroom.

Then again, it was this very formality that made the event rather extraordinary. Because, despite its alternative bent, this was no hempy hippie, shaman drum circle out in a field by the woods. The venue (the Seattle symphony building) was beautiful, the ceremony professional, full of elegance and class, and the president of the university spoke eloquently and passionately, and gave advice of such articulation and grace, you couldn't help but feel that something rather exceptional was
happening here.

In other words, this was not a ragtag assortment of herb-crazed eccentrics
promoting medical pot and compost toilets. These were deeply trained healers and full-power doctors, just doctors of a different, more openhearted, open-minded bent. What a thing.

In fact, the Bastyr ceremony possessed an element that seems to be missing from the huge array of grad ceremonies happening across the nation: change. Cool and atypical, hopeful and deeply informed, and just a little bit unexpected. Which is, by most accounts, the best kind.

Oh sure, you attend a regular ol' university and watch the engineering department grad ceremony or the comp lit ceremony, the physics department ceremony or the botany department ceremony and you get a feeling that, well, at least we're still trying to pump smart people out into the world. Many of them are still full of new ideas, fresh integrity and crushing debt that will take roughly 77 years to pay off, and yet, most will invariably end up jaded and burned out, working in marketing for a dot-com, wondering what happened to their dream of writing a book on how to make your own absinthe.

But watching the Bastyr ceremony was different. It was like watching a bucket of very peculiar and incandescent flowers get tossed onto a field of coal. This year, the school pumped more than 250 alternative healers out into the pill-popping, surgery-happy, overmedicated world (up from just 35 grads only a dozen years ago), from Chinese-medicine practitioners to professional acupuncturists, holistic-nutrition experts to spiritually aware alternative psychologists to even a few young 'n' sexy midwives, along with dozens of full NDs who will take their state board exams (just like Western docs) and enter into the teeming world of suffering and pain and not offer surgery or Lipitor within the first 10 minutes of your
consultation.

These doctors will, instead, spend hours getting to know patients, understanding lives and tapping into ancient ideas of medicinal arts; these are doctors who will harness the formidable power of nature and spirit and time-tested human wisdom to help smack illness upside the head and, hell, after all that, if you still need some Prozac and a surgical rearrangement of your spleen, then by all means, they can recommend that, too.

I know, it sounds crazy. Integration and balance and the honoring of nature and ancient medicine? Mutual respect for all healing arts, from tincture to scalpel, herb to chemical? What a thing to watch new healers of this ilk enter the world. It's almost enough to give you a dose of that most rare of healing inoculations: hope.

BAN Genetically Engineered Foods: Buy Organic & Support Local Farmers

I have just viewed the amazing documentary, The Future of Food. It is a gut-wrencher.

We must join together in getting ALL foods labeled genetically-modified if they are such. We must hold accountable the severe diseases and illnesses created by Monsanto and other large corporations such as ConAgra. With labels on food packaging, these large selfish horrific corporations will be held accountable.

When you eat a bag of corn chips and get short of breath, do you think why? You cannot look at the label and find out. If we join together and get a bill passed requiring labelling of GM food packaging, then we win a large portion of the battle.

In the short term, support your local farmers who grow organic foods and non-GM foods. Attend local farmer markets, community supported agriculture and co-op stores which supply foods direct from the farmers.

If you are on the fence about the harms of genetically modified foods, I urge you to watch The Future of Food. One view of that and you'll be throwing your corn flakes box at the TV screen.

That is what I want you to do....along with supporting your local farmers and voting to require labelling of genetically modified foods.

It is our health at stake. We are all a large lab rat as genetically modified foods are NOT tested well prior to release.

Now I know why there are so many food reactions and autoimmune diseases now - genetically modified foods likely have a major role.

Watch The Future of Food.

Be safe: HIV is not fun

For the next two quarters in clinic, I have the honor of working solely with HIV patients. It already has been empowering, exhausting, emotional and challenging.

Before working with the HIV population, I only heard about HIV in the textbooks, news and from stories. Now I see it every week hurting many lives.

I urge you to be careful sexually and with drug use. A fantastic fifteen minutes sexually or shooting up with a dirty needle can kill you slowly for fifteen years and much longer.

I am not saying that HIV patients are not doing well, many are. I am simply saying that I wish HIV was prevented more.

Yes the medications for HIV are excellent but there are horrific side effects which are painful, annoying and life-changing. The sheer volume of medications HIV patients consume is insane - one patient today was on 13 medications and about the same number of supplements. This patient is so drugged up that he collapsed on me in the treatment room having a mild seizure. Another was rubbing his leg continuously for 1 hour due to intense pain from AZT while his partner was in tears. Another wakes up numerous times a night from burning pain in his feet due to the antivirals. Another is recently diagnosed and really wants to toss the drugs in the garbage due to being already tired of the side effects.

So next time you prepare to have unprotected sex, remember this post.

Know your partner. Know the risks.

It is NOT worth the risk. Believe me.

Be well.

Thank you patients for trusting me to work with you. Not only do I learn about HIV treatments but the most important aspect - I learn about you and how amazing you are in strength of mind and body. Your body may be ill but your spirit is vibrant.
